Our Roots

Our Roots

Urban Farms Co. was born out of over two decades of pioneering work in sustainable agriculture by the Naandi Foundation, one of India’s largest multi-sector non-profits. The team behind UFCo has led transformational projects with farming communities across the country.

One of the most celebrated outcomes of this journey is ARAKU Coffee, a premium lifestyle brand co-created with tribal farmers in the Eastern Ghats. This effort not only positioned India on the global map of specialty organic coffee but also helped lift over 300,000 tribal lives out of poverty through regenerative agriculture.

Additionally, the team has led large-scale carbon projects since 2010, using agroforestry and land-use management as climate and financial tools to restore forests and enhance rural livelihoods.

These successful models of impact and scale laid the foundation for Urban Farms Co.— a business committed to transforming the food system while aligning profitability with purpose.

Our Journey

Founded in 2019, Urban Farms Co. (UFCo.) was spun out of Naandi Foundation to address the future needs of agriculture and food systems. We saw an urgent need for:

  • Deep traceability for consumers,
  • Environmental restoration through carbon sequestration, and
  • Farmer-centric profitability through regenerative models.

UFCo. took on the challenge of making regenerative agriculture the farmer’s first choice by building a model that is efficient, profitable, and convenient. Starting with perishable produce, we built decentralised hubs, developed a trusted farmer base and created a transparent supply chain. We have since expanded into non-perishable commodities, applying the same science-based and scalable approach across India.

A pioneer in social impact and development, Manoj has spent over two decades building transformative systems for rural communities. As the founding CEO of Naandi Foundation, he led the transformation of more than 2,000 tribal villages through regenerative agriculture—efforts that gave rise to the globally celebrated Araku Coffee brand. A Fellow of the World Bank as well as the Aspen Institute, he brings a rare combination of grassroots insight and global leadership in sustainable enterprise development.

Vikash Abraham

With a foundation in engineering and over 15 years in corporate leadership across operations, technology, and business strategy, Vikash in the last decade has channelled his experience into creating scalable, science-based solutions for regenerative agriculture. Over this period, he has worked hands-on with farming communities across India, designing systems that boost farmer incomes while restoring soil and ecosystem health. He bridges boardroom strategy with on-ground reality to drive real-world transformation in food systems.

Raheel blends financial expertise with a passion for social change. A Chartered Accountant with deep experience in audit, finance, and compliance, he has also led high-impact community development programs with a focus on quality and accountability.
